August of 2019, I was at my Pastor’s house volunteering for a youth event. As the event was wrapping up, my Pastor said, “I am putting together a mission team with the sole purpose to train missionaries in the US and foreign countries on how to defend themselves.” He said, “I am asking those who want to be a part of the team to commit to three years of Krav Maga training. During those three years, you would test to be an Instructor. The goal is to test up to a Level Three Instructor, and be able to take teams to train others.”
I replied, “yes, right” when he said, “I am putting together a mission team...” and said yes three more times while he was talking.
Then he said, “I want you to know the level of commitment I am asking for. We plan to train at least once a week for two hours in Krav Maga.”
So, you may be wondering, “what is Krav Maga?” The Wikipedia definition states that it is a military self-defense and fight system developed for the Israel Defense/Security Forces derived from a combination of techniques sourced from boxing, wrestling, aikido, judo, and karate along with realistic fight training. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency.
So, in October 2019, Team 144 was formed. We currently have 11 members (see photo above), we train 1 to 2 days a week for at least 2 hours.
In February 2020, we went on our first mission trip. We went to Washington, DC, to train an International Organization that Fights Human Trafficking.
The name “Team 144” comes from the bible verse in Psalm 144. “Blessed be GOD, my mountain, who trains me to fight fair and well.” (MSG) And that verse explains the team’s mission, to train to fight fair and well so that we can teach others to defend themselves as they serve God in this dark world.
